Rewarding Your Child for Good Behavior

Preschool Greensboro

Children in preschool are well into the fall season and have likely gotten to know new friends and teachers. For many young learners a time of adjustment was required, especially when moving up to higher levels of learning or attending a new preschool. By now your child likely has a better understanding of the daycare, childcare, or preschool environment, bringing bright smiles and compliments from your child’s teacher.

Parents love to hear when their child is thriving and doing well in preschool. You spend countless hours concerned about your child’s growth and development and seeking a curriculum with a focus that includes behavior skills like communication and social interaction. When a teacher has a complimentary word regarding a child, parents delight in the good news.

When you hear good news regarding your child’s behavior, consider these ideas to reward your child and let him know how much you appreciate his efforts.

  • Look for reasons to reward. The reward doesn’t have to be big, a simple gesture to recognize your child’s efforts goes a long way in letting your child know that you care about everything pertaining to him, big or small.
  • Stay positive. When you reward good behavior, avoid discussing bad behavior. Let your child have this special moment with a positive focus and no mention of problem behavior areas.
  • Make the reward simple. Look for creative ways to reward like a special sweet treat, more time doing a fun activity, or your child’s choice for a family outing.
  • Choose a reward that you can repeat easily. Avoid awards that are too costly or time consuming. Instead choose a reward that is easy to accomplish.
  • Give your preschooler a new privilege. If your child has been asking for a privilege like staying up late on a weekend night or eating a late night sweet treat, consider saying, “Yes!” as a reward for good behavior. Make sure your child knows the privilege is a special reward and not a recurring event.

There are so many simple ways to recognize your child and give the individual attention that every child deserves. At Kids ‘R’ Kids Learning Academy of Greensboro, we take every opportunity to encourage children by letting them know they are loved and appreciated. Our Hug First, Then Teach philosophy holds true in every classroom and throughout our curriculum design.
